Concealer Brush Techniques: How To Use Your Concealer Brush Like a Pro

Applying makeup like a professional can be challenging since most of us didn't go to cosmetology school. However, you don't need formal training to learn how to master helpful techniques.

Concealer is a holy grail product because of its ability to cover all of your imperfections. This product only works, though, if you know how to apply it. There are many different techniques and ways to put your concealer on, and one of those is with a brush.

We are going to go over the various concealer brushes and how to use them to HIDE everything.

Do I Really Need a Concealer Brush?

If you're wondering if you actually need a concealer brush or if you can just use something like an eyeshadow brush, the answer is yes; you need a concealer brush! It is designed explicitly for concealer and it’s one of the best tools to help you achieve your desired coverage.

Concealer brushes are great when you need to apply the product in those hard-to-reach places in the nooks and crannies of your face, like around the nose and eyes. Using the right tools can also mean the difference between having a patchy complexion or a flawless finish.

The vast majority of people who wear makeup own concealer, but not everyone has concealer brushes. Some people like to use makeup sponges or their fingertips to apply concealer instead. While these are great options, sometimes a brush is the best option when you need to conceal places like the corner of your nose.

A brush gives you precise control over where you are placing the product that a sponge and your fingers do not. Therefore, even if you might feel like a concealer brush isn't necessary, consider keeping one on hand for those hard-to-reach places.

Different Types of Concealer Brushes

There are many different kinds of concealer brushes to choose from. They come in various shapes, sizes, and they can also have different types of bristles.

There are synthetic bristles and natural bristles. Synthetic brushes are usually the ones the professionals reach for when it comes to liquid or cream products. Synthetic bristles don't absorb the product, and they're also easier to clean than natural bristles.

When it comes to which type of concealer brush you need, consider what you conceal most often. Different types of brushes are better for covering certain areas more than others. You may want to add more than one type of concealer brush to your collection.

Here are a few concealer brushes to consider:

  • Skinny Pointed Tip Brush: A small skinny brush with a pointed tip is essential when applying concealer to blemishes. It concentrates the product in a specific area and allows the rest of your skin to breathe.
  • Medium-Sized Flat Angled Brush: When looking to conceal your under-eye area, reach for an angled flat brush. The shape and size fit in the eye area and allows you to easily blend out your concealer.
  • Mini Buffer Brush: This type of brush is fluffy and firm at the same time. The rounded tip allows for precision and helps you get the product in those hard-to-reach areas. The denseness of the brush is excellent for full coverage applications and won't leave any streaks behind.
  • Medium Buffer Brush: A larger brush is ideal when you're applying concealer to a larger area. For example, if you're trying to cover a tattoo or melasma, a bigger brush can get the job done quickly.

Concealer Brush Techniques

There are many makeup brush tips and tricks to help you achieve a flawless finish. Here are five steps to a flawless finish.

Step One

Before you can apply concealer, you should prep your skin. Using moisturizer or primer will help your makeup go on smoothly and stay in place all day.

Step Two

The other important step before the concealer is applying your foundation. You should apply foundation first to even out your complexion as much as possible. HIDE Premium Foundation has pigments that mimic skin for a flawless natural finish. After foundation, you will be able to identify the areas that need a little more coverage.

Step Three

If you use a color-correcting concealer, use your concealer brush to apply it. Choose a denser brush and use dabbing motions to apply the concealer in the concentrated area.

Step Four

Use a concealer that matches your skin tone and go over any color corrector or areas you see imperfections peeking through. Hide Premium Concealer provides full coverage and works great on all skin types. A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount on your brush and build up the coverage as needed.

No matter what type of concealer brush you use, try not to drag the concealer around. You want to concentrate the coverage in one area by using circular and tapping motions. If you use a dragging motion, you will just be moving the concealer around, and you won't get the coverage you're looking to achieve.

Step Five

Once you have a flawless finish, apply a small amount of translucent powder to lock in the coverage all day. Keep in mind that HIDE premium products have a soft matte finish and don't necessarily require powder to set them.

Once you complete all five steps, you should have the perfect base to apply the rest of your makeup on top of!

Concealer Brush Tips and Tricks

Once you get the basic concealer brush techniques down, you can implement a few more tips.

Use It To Apply Eye Primer

You can use your concealer brushes for more than just concealer. Try applying your eyeshadow primer with a small concealer brush. It will allow you to cover the corners of your lids that can be hard to reach when using your finger.

Use It To Fix Makeup Mistakes

Everyone has messed up some part of their makeup at some point or another. Whether it's from drawing your eyebrow pencil a little too high or getting lipstick outside the lines, a concealer brush can help you clean up the lines. Trace around your brows or lips with a small amount of concealer on a small brush, and no one will ever know.

Clean Your Concealer Brushes

You should clean your concealer brushes just like you do your other makeup tools. You want to remove the makeup and dirt that collects on them regularly. Otherwise, your brushes could negatively affect your skin, and you may have a lot more to conceal.

Dirty makeup brushes can irritate your skin and spread harmful bacteria around. You can end up with clogged pores and acne, or even an infection. To keep your makeup brushes bacteria-free and protect your skin, wash them every seven to ten days.

Rinse the ends of your brushes in warm, soapy water or a makeup brush cleanser. Use gentle circular motions against your hand or on the bottom of the bowl to help remove the makeup. Try not to emerge the whole brush in water since this can dissolve the glue holding the bristles together. After, rinse them under the faucet and then squeeze the excess water out. Finally, place them on a towel to dry.
