4 Ways on How To Get Makeup Foundation Out of Clothes

When you wear makeup, it inevitably ends up on your clothing sooner than later. You can get foundation transfer if you're not careful when changing your clothes or just doing daily activities. However, you don't have to let these stains ruin your favorite shirt.

The trick is to act as soon as possible before your makeup sets into the fabric. You can do many different things to get foundation out of clothes. The type of makeup and the tools you use will determine what stain-removing method you should use.

We are going to go over the steps you can take to get rid of a foundation stain. You will know what to do the next time you get makeup on your clothing.

Makeup Wipes to the Rescue

If you accidentally get makeup on your clothes and you need a quick fix, a makeup wipe can be very useful. You need to use it before the stain has a chance to set, though, if you want to have any chance of getting it out.

You also may want to do a quick spot test before using the wipe. This step is important because you don’t want to end up with an unsightly spot. Grab a makeup wipe and use it in an area no one can see on the clothing. If it looks good, you’re safe to proceed.

First, try to dab the area to lift any excess makeup on the clothing. Next, take the wipe and gently rub the foundation spot. You don’t want to vigorously rub the fabric because you can end up forcing it deeper into the fibers and even damage it.

A makeup wipe will only be effective on small spots with just a little bit of product transfer. For bigger or more stubborn stains, you’re going to need more than a makeup wipe. However, they can be helpful if you have nothing else and don’t want the stain to set. You will have to follow up with one of the other methods below to remove the stain later.

How To Get Oil-Based Liquid Foundation Stains Out

There are different methods for different foundation formulations. For oil-based liquid foundation stains, you’ll need dish soap and laundry detergent. Dish soap has grease-fighting properties that can be very helpful when breaking down oil-based products.

Here is a step-by-step guide to getting this type of foundation out of your clothing:

Step 1

First, you’ll want to dampen the stained area with cold water. The water will help soften the stain and allow the soap to penetrate it easier. You may want to use a spray bottle if the clothing is made from delicate fabric.

Step 2

Once it’s wet, apply a few drops of dish soap to the stain. If your fabric is delicate, you may want to try a kitchen hand soap instead of dish soap. This type of soap is less harsh than dish soap but still can fight dirt and oil. It’s a more gentle solution that won’t damage the fabric. Let the soap sit on the area for a few minutes before moving on.

Step 3

Begin to work the soap into the stain gently. You can use your fingers or a wet cloth. This step will help break up the oils in the foundation. If the fabric isn’t delicate, you can use a soft toothbrush to work in the soap.

Step 4

Blot the stain to remove any makeup sitting on the surface. Be careful not to press the foundation back into the fabric. You also don’t want to rub it off because it can spread the makeup and make the stain bigger.

Step 5

Rinse out the stain using cold water. After, examine the area and see if there’s any foundation left over. You may need to repeat the steps a few times before the spot is completely gone.

Step 6

If you do need to repeat the steps, try laundry detergent first. Let the detergent sit on the stain for several minutes.

Step 7

Wash the clothing according to the label. After, check if you can still see the stain. Do not put the garment in the dryer until you are 100% certain the spot is gone. The dryer may permanently set any remaining stain that’s left.

How To Get Oil-Free Liquid Foundation Stains Out

Removing a makeup stain caused by an oil-free liquid foundation can also be challenging. One cleaning method is using shaving cream and rubbing alcohol. This combination can work well on oil-free products, like HIDE Premium Foundation and concealer.

Here is a step-by-step guide:

Step 1

Apply shaving cream over the stained spot. You don't need to use a specific brand. Any foam shaving cream will work. Add a little rubbing alcohol into the shaving cream before applying it if you have a more difficult stain.

Step 2

Leave the shaving cream on the stain for several minutes.

Step 3

Begin to work the shaving cream into the stain using circular motions. This step will help to loosen up the foundation in the fabric.

Step 4

Once the solution has had time to sit on the spot, rinse it off with cold water. If the stain is still noticeable, apply more shaving cream and repeat the steps. You can also try rinsing with warm water instead of cold. However, don't use hot water as it can potentially set a stain.

Step 5

After you rinse the clothing out completely, use a dry towel to pat the area. This step can help lift out any traces of the foundation.

Step 6

Run the garment through the wash to finish the process. As previously mentioned, make sure the stain is gone before placing it in the dryer. You may want to hang dry it before you examine the area.

How To Get Powder Foundation Stains Out

Removing a powder foundation stain can be much easier compared to liquid formulations.

Here is how you get out powder foundation:

Step 1

Try blowing off any excess powder as soon as you notice the stain. You can use your mouth or a blow dryer to try to remove any loose powder. If you immediately try to brush it off, you could end up pressing more product into the fabric.

Step 2

Once you've blown out as much foundation as possible, apply a few drops of liquid dish soap.

Step 3

Use a clean cloth or sponge to work the soap into the stain. Be careful not to rub too much because you can end up spreading the stain out. Rinse the area and repeat the process if needed.

Step 4

Take a dry towel to blot the area and remove excess water. Wash the garment as instructed on the tag.
