How to Stop Concealer from Creasing: Tips and Tricks

You have a beautiful, flawless finish when you leave the house, but when you check your reflection later in the day, you notice what you dread most—creasing.

Your makeup is settling into your fine lines and wrinkles, ruining your whole makeup look. All that hard work and product may feel wasted thanks to the less-than-ideal outcome. You may wonder where you went wrong or what you can do to prevent creasing.

First, our skin isn't perfectly smooth: that just isn't natural. It has creases and crevices from making facial expressions and age. There are things you can do, though, to keep your makeup from creasing. However, since your face moves throughout the day, it is not necessarily possible to avoid it altogether.

HIDE is here to give you the tips and tricks to stop your makeup from settling into the crevasses. If you follow these simple steps, you will notice a significant improvement the next time you step out of the house and check your makeup.

Different Forms Of Concealer

Concealers come in many different consistencies and formulations. If you want to stop your concealer from creasing, it's important to know how they vary.

Cream

Cream concealer, as it sounds, is a thick creamy formulation.

Cream concealers are highly pigmented, and people that struggle with dry skin may lean towards cream concealers for the added hydration.

Since it is very pigmented, cream concealers offer a lot of coverage, which can be good for covering a blemish.

Even though cream concealers work well at hiding imperfections, they can be more challenging to blend out and aren't ideal for areas like under your eyes, especially when it comes to creasing.

Stick

Similar to cream concealer is stick concealer. It has a more compact feel since it's in stick form. Stick concealers are also very pigmented and offer a lot of coverage.

Stick concealers are a good choice when you want to have precise control over where you are applying your concealer. You can focus on covering specific areas by placing the concealer in the exact location you want it.

However, just like cream concealers, stick concealers can crease in specific areas like under your eyes.

If you're looking for something that looks great all day, you might want to pass on using a stick concealer in areas of your face with fine lines and wrinkles

Liquid

Liquid concealers are similar in consistency to high coverage foundations but much thicker. Since they are liquid, they are the most versatile out of the three we've gone over.

Liquid concealers are easily buildable and allow you to achieve medium to full coverage makeup looks. Unlike cream and stick concealers, liquid concealers work well in your under your eye area. A high-quality liquid concealer can effortlessly hide dark circles and brighten the face without settling into creases when applied correctly.

While cream and stick foundations can clog your pores, a liquid concealer allows your skin to breathe a little.

How To Stop Concealer From Settling Into Fine Lines

Now that you have a better idea of the different concealer formulations, let's go into how to prevent creasing.

Strategically Place Your Concealer

When it comes to makeup in general, you have to learn to identify how much is too much product and what is not enough. You want to try to use just enough to cover your imperfection with concealer, but you don't want to use so much that you look cakey.

Start with a thin layer of concealer and slowly build up the coverage until you have concealed the imperfection.

Use A Lightweight Concealer

The formulation of your concealer affects how much it will crease on your face. A dry concealer will often crease more because it is less flexible and can adhere to the fine lines on your face.

A lightweight concealer, like a liquid concealer, won't settle into your creases as much. HIDE Premium Concealer will set perfectly without completely drying out.

Use The Right Tools

The tools you use to apply your concealer are also crucial to avoid creasing.

Try applying your concealer with a small synthetic brush to place it only where you need it. Next, use a damp makeup sponge, or even your fingertip, to pat the place where you put it. This technique ensures the area is covered and blended out, but there's not a lot of product left sitting on the skin to find its way into your creases.

How To Stop Concealer From Creasing Under Your Eyes

Your under-eyes are one of the areas most prone to creasing.

The first step to prevent your concealer from settling into those crevasses under your eyes is primer. You can use an eye cream as a primer since it can easily absorb into your skin. If you do this, you should give it a few minutes to thoroughly soak into your skin before you go in with a concealer. However, if you're in a rush, you can press a blotting paper or tissue under your eye to remove excess product.

Once your eye area is ready for concealer, go in with a liquid formulation. As mentioned previously, a stick or cream concealer will crease easier in your under-eye area. Try not to apply the concealer too close to your lashes. Instead, you can blend your concealer up to your lash line to prevent using too much product.

Use a damp makeup sponge for a flawless finish. You can also use your fingertip, but make sure to use your ring finger since it doesn't apply a lot of pressure to this delicate skin.

Set Your Concealer

After you have applied your concealer to your face and under-eyes, it's time to set it and forget it. However, it can be easy to mess this step up, so try to remember the less is more rule.

If you apply too much powder in your under-eye area, specifically, it won't have the desired effect. A small amount of translucent powder though across your face can help prevent creasing throughout the day. Reach for a fluffy powder brush to apply it.  Before you set it with powder, though, give your concealer a few minutes to settle in your creases. Once it's had some time, dab it out with a tissue, then go in with powder.

The other way you can set your face is with a setting spray. A setting spray will help lock your makeup in place and help prevent it from sliding into those creases throughout the day.

Extra Tips And Tricks To Avoid Creasing

There are several things you can try to prevent creasing. Here are a few extra ones to try out next time you do your makeup.

Reach For Mattifying Toner

Before you prime your skin, use a mattifying toner. This step helps your concealer last longer and stay smooth for hours.

A toner removes excess oil on the skin that may cause your concealer to slide around and slip into those creases. So, after you wash your face, reach for a toner to go on under your moisturizer and primer.

Dab Away The Excess

We touched on this when applying concealer to under-eyes, but you can also try blotting in other areas of your face where you crease.

After you've put on your concealer, gently pat the area with a sheet of blotting paper or tissue. This technique removes excess product and helps to leave just the pigment behind, which enables it last longer without creasing.

Layer Concealer Slowly

Remember the less-is-more approach when applying concealer if you struggle with creasing.

If you go in with a really thick layer of concealer to start, you will end up with a lot of product left to settle into those fine lines. Begin with a thin layer and build off of that until you have the desired level of coverage.

Applying your concealer this way means you won't use too much and you won't cause caking and creasing.

In Summary

There are several things you do to prevent your concealer from creasing.

First, make sure you are using the proper formulation in the right places. You don't want to use a drier concealer under your eyes. Instead, use a hydrating liquid concealer.

Next, make sure you are slowly building up coverage and not just starting with a ton of concealer all at once. Applying it this way will ensure you don't have leftover product that can settle into your fine lines.

Finally, dab away any excess concealer leftover and set your face using a translucent powder or setting spray. This step keeps everything where you want it and not where you don't.

HIDE Premium Concealer is long-lasting, waterproof, and perfect for covering places that crease like your under-eyes.
